Are there Termites in Geelong?Posted on February 27, 2015
One of the most common questions we get asked on almost a daily basis is… “Are there any Termites in the Geelong area?” In short, the answer is yes!
Termites are found all throughout Victoria with a high incidence of attack in most built up urban areas. Geelong and its surrounds are no exception.
There are many types of termites in and around our area, the the most destructive of which are Subterranean Termites. These guys have been a part of our environment for thousands of years. Now, with the population exploding and more homes being built, they have, and will, become more of a hazard as time goes on. This is because these homes with wonderfully landscaped yards utilising sleeper retaining walls with lovely watered gardens, become one big attractive potential food source.
Some Termite tips;
Keeping your homes perimeter foundations and or subfloor space as dry as possible is a great start to help make your home less attractive to these hungry critters. Moisture and timber in soil contact are very conducive to termite activity, so things like leaking taps, faulty drains, showers, sinks, gardens against the home, untreated timber retaining walls, stored timber under the house or even firewood stored alongside the building can attract Termites that may be foraging nearby. Humidity and lack of ventilation under homes also contribute to many a termite attack.
Insurance? Nope sorry!
CSIRO studies show that Termites cause around 780 million dollars damage a year Australia wide, so is it any wonder that you can’t find an Insurance company brave enough to cover for Termites. These guys eat 24/7 and Infest more than 150,000 Aussie homes and buildings a year! A large Termite colony is capable of demolishing and average size home in around two years, another reason why annual termite inspections are so important.
