Our Geelong pests are stirring!

Posted on October 31, 2015

Its that time of year again!

As the weather warms up so does the metabolism of Geelong, the Bellarine and Surfcoast shires insect population.

The temperature change wakes six and eight legged pests alike from their winter slumber.

Our Geelong pests come in many shapes and sizes.

We have the miniscule ant, the destructive termite, the disease-carrying cockroach, the nasty Red Back and White Tailed spiders, even the odd infestation of clothes moth and carpet beetle to name a few.

The more humid months to come will also see outbreaks of flea infestations and the appearance of those yellow and black nasties, the European Wasps.

Tempted to sort it yourself?

Here are a couple of reasons as to why DIY or home remedies should be avoided.

You could end up with ants in your pants!

Spraying ants in the home may appear to fix the situation temporarily but you can rest assured this action will fracture the colony causing the ants segregated from their colony to bud off and start again. Another queen equals more eggs and at a minimum, double the trouble!

Cockroaches in the cupboards?

The same can be said for cockroaches, failure to treat these guys properly can end in spreading them far and wide from the original harbourage point.

Cockies are gregarious (they like to hang out together), but if disturbed ,will split up and before you know it, you have dropped egg sacks all over the place, capable of hatching 200 odd nymphs or baby cockroaches each.

Termite DIY work is fraught with danger!

Your home is your most expensive asset, why resort to Google and a friend’s instruction to treat your termites? Unless you know exactly what your doing, what species of termite you’re dealing with and how to use the product you have, take a wide berth!

You run the risk of Termites clearing out giving you the false impression that they are gone for good, only for them to turn up in another area in the future.

I’ve seen people literally chase termites around their homes for years, annually spending money on useless store bought chemicals and baiting products with a builder on speed dial to repair damage that could have been nipped in the bud day one by a professional.

Now that’s the magic word, professional……

Don’t make the problem worse, make it go away!
